No story too small. No angle too wide. No dive too deep.

By 1957, mounting tensions between Cold War nations had reached a fever pitch. The threat of global nuclear war that had once loomed on the horizon, now appeared imminent.

Fearing the worst, a group of artists and scientists met to discuss their concerns with the direction mankind was taking. After much deliberation, it was decided that if humanity were to be preserved, a new society would need to be created; one far removed from the one seemingly intent on ushering in its own demise.

So after weeks of careful planning, the group set to work constructing what would become their new city and permanent underground home—Atomic Orchard.

Months passed, and as Atomic Orchard neared completion, the group decided it was time. They gathered whatever resources they could, bid their final farewells to friends and family members, and descended the staircase through the secret entrance, sealing it shut behind them.

As the years ticked on, Atomic Orchard thrived in its parallel existence. The city expanded, populations grew, and life pressed on without any contact with the world above.

That was until the advent of the internet…

While working late one evening on the city’s sole computer system, one of Atomic Orchard’s scientists stumbled upon a connection to the World Wide Web. For the first time in over 50 years, the citizens of Atomic Orchard made contact with the outside world.

After discovering that society had not yet destroyed itself, a committee soon gathered to discuss the proposition of returning to the surface. The notion, however, was short-lived.

Having browsed the internet for only a short while, they came to the unanimous conclusion that not only was there nothing of value left to return to in society, but that it would have been far too inhumane to do so.

So instead, a compromise was reached—Atomic Orchard would create a website of their own, allowing citizens of Atomic Orchard to have an outlet for which to share their work with the rest of world.
